Welcome home: your kitten's 3-3-3 journey

Bringing a new Pure-Fection Maine Coons kitten home is an exciting time! We want you to feel comfortable welcoming your new family member, understanding that adaptation takes time and patience. Your kitten will need time to adjust to their new surroundings and new family, and it’s important to respect this process. We are here to help every step of the way!

The first 3 days: Decompression

During the initial three days, your kitten will be experiencing a brand new world. Everything is unfamiliar, from the sounds and smells to the people and surroundings. At this stage, your kitten needs to adapt to you and begin to trust their new environment.

  • Let your cat come to you – Give them space and allow them to adjust at their own pace.

  • Prepare a safe space – Set up a quiet room with food, water, and a litter box. We call this Base Camp (see video below) and often suggest your bedroom!

  • Be patient – While we know they are cute, and you are excited, avoid overwhelming your cat with too much interaction too soon.

The First 3 weeks: Building Comfort

After the initial adjustment period, your kitten will start to feel more comfortable and confident. Over the next three weeks, they will begin to explore more of their new home and establish a routine. This is an important time for setting boundaries, continuing litter box training, and introducing playtime. Consistent feeding times, play sessions, and quiet resting periods will help your kitten feel secure and understand what is expected of them. Continue to build on the trust you've established.

  • Establish a routine – Begin socializing and gently introducing new experiences.

  • Provide enrichment – Offer scratching posts, beds, and interactive toys.

  • Expand their world – Gradually allow supervised access beyond base-camp to the rest of the home.

The first 3 months: Feeling at Home

By three months, your Pure-Fection Maine Coons kitten should be fully integrated into your household. This period is about strengthening the bond and connection you share, ensuring they truly feel at home. Continue with consistent care, plenty of play, and affection. This is when their personality will truly shine! Remember, this takes time and respect for their individual journey. We are always here to support you and answer any questions you may have.

Tips for a Smooth Transition

  • Set up your cat’s space before bringing them home.

  • Block off hard-to-reach hiding spots.

  • Offer cozy hideaways like cardboard boxes or covered beds.

  • Spend quiet time in their space to help them get used to your voice.

  • Be patient—don’t rush introductions to other pets.
